Marla brings a boundless love for policy, politics, and equity. She enjoys serving as a bridge that people can walk across to find common ground. At Resource Media, Marla uses strategic communications to confront the climate crisis, expand abortion access, advance public health, and promote workers’ rights, partnering with advocates to develop enduring solutions that center low-income communities and people of color. She’s adept at messaging, strategy, writing, editing, digital and traditional media, narrative change, capacity building, communications training and planning, and ethical storytelling.
Highlights & Background
Over the past 20+ years, Marla’s career has spanned government, nonprofit, and philanthropy settings, on Capitol Hill, in the Bay Area, and in New York. She’s worked at the intersection of advocacy and communications on issues as varied as U.S. Supreme Court and federal judicial nominations, youth gun violence prevention, affordable housing, clean air, reproductive justice, and climate change. As an Environment Fellow with the San Francisco Foundation, Marla co-managed a climate resilience grantmaking portfolio that awarded over $1 million to Bay Area nonprofits, and she played a pivotal role in launching a multiyear San Francisco initiative to transform city-owned land into hubs for urban agriculture and healthy food access. Marla also previously worked at Greenbelt Alliance, Alliance for Justice, and the Rehabilitation Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Education. In 2010, she earned a Master of Public Administration from San Francisco State University with an emphasis in sustainable development. Previously, she graduated from James Madison University with a B.A. in Sociology and minors in political communication and women’s studies. Marla calls Brooklyn home.
